ISO Pesticide Common Names Update: Metcyclofenstrobin, Isoxafenacil, and β-Sitosterol

by Pamela Gu
May 10, 2025

New Common Names Approved for Key Pesticide Products in 2025

In May 2025, several significant updates were made to ISO pesticide common names, including approvals for Metcyclofenstrobin, Isoxafenacil, and β-sitosterol. These updates reflect the ongoing efforts to standardize and streamline pesticide nomenclature within the global agricultural sector, ensuring consistency in the industry and helping growers and regulators identify and track crop protection products effectively.

Metcyclofenstrobin: New Common Name Provisionally Approved

A new common name has been provisionally approved for Metcyclofenstrobin, a strobilurin fungicide developed by Syngenta Crop Protection AG. The IUPAC name for this compound is methyl (2Z)-2-(5-cyclohexyl-2-methylphenoxy)-3-methoxyprop-2-enoate, and it has been designated with CAS Reg. No. 2490157-71-4.

Metcyclofenstrobin is a fungicide that works under the phenoxypropenoate class, designed to control a variety of fungal diseases in crops. The InChIKey for this compound is OCIRCFJCEQNJDN-ATVHPVEESA-N.

This provisional approval, dated May 7th, 2025, will stand until November 7th, 2025, by which time any objections to the name “Metcyclofenstrobin” can be raised. If no objections are received by the specified deadline, the name will be officially included in the next edition of ISO 1750, which will feature preferred names alongside common names for pesticide products.

Isoxafenacil: New Common Name Fully Approved

On May 7th, 2025, the common name “Isoxafenacil” was officially approved for an N-phenylimide herbicide developed by Nantong Jiangshan Agrochemical and Chemicals Co. Ltd. This herbicide is known by the Chinese common name 苯嘧草唑.

The IUPAC name for this herbicide is ethyl (5RS)-3-(2-chloro-4-fluoro-5-[3-methyl-2,6-dioxo-4-(trifluoromethyl)-3,6-dihydropyrimidin-1(2H)-yl]phenyl}-5-methyl-4,5-dihydro-1,2-oxazole-5-carboxylate with CAS Reg. No. 1949837-17-5. Isoxafenacil is used as a herbicide for effective weed control, and its chemical structure provides long-lasting action against a wide variety of weeds.

With no objections raised during the review process, the name Isoxafenacil is now officially included in the ISO 1750 register. This approval brings further clarity to the market, ensuring consistent terminology for this widely used herbicide.

β-Sitosterol: Preferred Name Approved

A preferred name has been approved for β-sitosterol, a steroid fungicide produced by Shaanxi Sunger Road Bio-Science Co., Ltd. Also known by its Chinese common name 甾烯醇, β-sitosterol is a bioactive compound with applications in both fungicides and virucides.

The IUPAC name for this substance is (1R,3aS,3bS,7S,9aR,9bS,11aR)-1-[(2R,5R)-5-ethyl-6-methylheptan-2-yl]-9a,11a-dimethyl-2,3,3a,3b,4,6,7,8,9,9a,9b,10,11,11a-tetradecahydro-1H-cyclopenta[a]phenanthren-7-ol, with CAS Reg. No. 83-46-5. The compound’s activity includes fungicidal and virucidal properties, making it a versatile tool for managing crop diseases.

This name has now been included in the ISO 1750 register as a preferred name, providing clearer identification for the compound in global markets. There were no objections to this name during the review period.

Implications and Next Steps

These updates reflect the ongoing commitment of ISO and the agrochemical industry to maintain clear, standardized names for pesticides, ensuring global consistency. With the Metcyclofenstrobin provisional approval period ending in November 2025, stakeholders are encouraged to raise any objections before the final inclusion in ISO 1750.

For Isoxafenacil and β-sitosterol, these updates will provide a clear framework for further regulatory and commercial processes, enabling better tracking, labeling, and usage in crop protection efforts worldwide.
