China informatics – May 12, 2025 – Syngenta Vegetable Seeds has inaugurated a new $9 million Seed Health Lab in Enkhuizen, the Netherlands. This cutting-edge facility is designed to reinforce the company’s global quality control network, ensuring high standards of seed health for growers across 124 countries.
Investing in Global Seed Health
The new Enkhuizen lab is part of a broader $30 million investment since 2022, supporting Syngenta’s expanding Seed Health Quality Control (QC) infrastructure. It complements similar state-of-the-art labs in the United States and India, further anchoring Syngenta’s vision of global agricultural excellence.
The lab serves two critical functions:
- Development of new seed health testing protocols
- Routine testing support for Syngenta’s main seed processing operations in the Netherlands
Capable of processing tens of thousands of tests annually, the lab enhances Syngenta’s ability to detect and manage seed-borne pathogens across a portfolio of 30+ crops.
Responding to Evolving Phytosanitary Risks
Equipped with advanced molecular diagnostics, the facility specializes in bacterial, fungal, and viral disease testing. Its goal is to mitigate health risks in seed production and distribution by rapidly detecting emerging pathogens, thereby safeguarding supply chain integrity.
Erik Postma, Global Head of Quality Management at Syngenta Vegetable Seeds, emphasized:
“This facility represents a significant leap forward in our global QC footprint. With standardized protocols and advanced molecular tools, we’re better equipped than ever to meet the challenges of seed health in a rapidly evolving global landscape.”
A Strategic Asset for Seed Trade and Food Security
The Enkhuizen lab aligns with international accreditation systems and phytosanitary regulations, facilitating safe and efficient global seed movement. This is especially vital as global agriculture faces increased scrutiny around biosecurity, seed traceability, and sustainability.
Matthew Johnston, Global Head of Syngenta Vegetable Seeds & Flowers, added:
“We are not just delivering seeds—we’re delivering trust. This investment reinforces our commitment to sustainable agriculture, food security, and customer confidence through uncompromising quality.”
