Lepimectin: Mitsui Chemicals’ 16-Membered Macrolide Bio-Insecticide Enhancing Resistance Management

Lepimectin, developed by Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals, Inc. in 1997, is a novel 16-membered macrolide bio-insecticide derived from the structural modification of the renowned biopesticide milbemycin. Comprising Lepimectin A3 and Lepimectin A4, the compound was registered in Japan in 2006 and launched in 2010 under the trade name Aniki. It is primarily used to control Lepidoptera and Homoptera pests in vegetables and fruits such as cabbage, tomato, citrus, strawberry, and grapes. Its efficacy and fast-acting properties, especially against Lepidopteran pests, make it one of the most promising broad-spectrum and non-cross-resistant bio-insecticides available.

Application and Insecticidal Spectrum

Lepimectin is widely applied in field crops such as Chinese cabbage, radish, tomato, eggplant, lettuce, broccoli, onions, tea, and citrus. It targets a variety of pests including:

  • Plutella xylostella (diamondback moth)
  • Spodoptera litura (armyworm)
  • Helicoverpa armigera (cotton bollworm)
  • Whiteflies, leafminers, leafrollers, and other Lepidoptera and Homoptera species

The insecticide is particularly effective against pests that are rapidly developing resistance to other compounds. Its mechanism of action involves activation of glutamate-gated chloride channels, causing paralysis and death in target pests.

  • Application: Recommended for rotational use with avermectin-based insecticides to delay resistance development.
