Apoena Agro: A New Chapter in Brazilian Biotech Innovation
Brazilian biotechnology leader Apoena Biotech has launched Apoena Agro, a new division dedicated to developing bioinputs derived from microorganisms isolated through bioprospecting in unique Brazilian biomes such as the Amazon and Fernando de Noronha. With this initiative, Apoena aims to supply sustainable, highly effective biopesticides, biostimulants, and inoculants for modern agriculture.
The company also inaugurated a new state-of-the-art Agro R&D laboratory and continues to lead scientific expeditions across diverse ecosystems. To date, more than 800 microbial strains have been isolated, forming a core part of Apoena’s Microbial Strain Bank.
Harnessing Brazil’s Biodiversity for Biological Agriculture
Apoena’s flagship bioprospecting projects, Amazônia Azul and Amazônia Verde, were conducted in the Fernando de Noronha archipelago and Tapajós National Forest, respectively. These efforts yielded hundreds of microbial strains from soil, roots, fruits, marine organisms, and more. These strains form the basis of biological inputs with potential in carbon sequestration, disease resistance, and soil health improvement.
Apoena Biotech, known for its eco-centric mission, registered five new biopesticides with Brazil’s MAPA, ANVISA, and IBAMA in 2023. These products target major crops like soybeans, sugarcane, coffee, and corn. The company has also filed registrations for additional biopesticides and biological inoculants.
Infrastructure and Strategic Partnerships Fuel Growth
Apoena built a biological fermentation unit with a monthly capacity of 140,000 liters to support large-scale production. The company also introduced a new service department, offering co-development, bioprocess improvement, and white-label manufacturing services.
Its new R&D facility features cutting-edge equipment: protein/lipid analysis systems, bioreactors simulating industrial conditions, RT-PCR, HPLC, and high-resolution microscopy. Apoena allocates 5% of its revenue to R&D, reinforcing its focus on innovation.
Apoena recently partnered with SENAI Brazil to identify industrial applications of microbial secondary metabolites. This collaboration enhances the discovery pipeline and positions Apoena as a pioneer in sustainable biotech solutions.
A Sustainable Vision for Agribusiness
CEO Bruno Carillo emphasized the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating: “We aim to bring biotechnology to everyone by transforming Brazilian biodiversity into high-performance agribusiness solutions.”
Major Export Value, Exporters, Import Countries:
- Apoena Biotech currently focuses on the Brazilian domestic market but is poised for international expansion in Latin America, the U.S., and Europe as demand for biological crop protection rises globally.
