Summary:
-
China has approved 88 new cornfield herbicide products in 2024, according to the China Pesticide Information Network.
-
Topramezone is the most registered active ingredient, reflecting rising industry preference for newer HPPD-inhibitor chemistry.
-
Leading domestic pesticide producers are aggressively expanding corn herbicide portfolios, with increased activity among export-driven firms.
Surge in Corn Herbicide Registrations Reflects Strategic Crop Focus
In of Q1 2024, a total of 88 new herbicide products targeting cornfields have been registered in China, highlighting the continued strategic importance of corn production to national food security. The newly approved products include 65 mixed formulations and 23 single-active formulations, according to the China Pesticide Information Network.
Among six registered dosage forms, oil dispersion (OD) dominates with 48 registrations, followed by suspension concentrates (SC) with 18 and suspo-emulsions (SE) with 12. Other forms recorded fewer than 10 approvals each.
Topramezone Dominates Ingredient Choices
Out of 16 active ingredients, Topramezone leads with 42 registrations, far ahead of older herbicides like atrazine, terbuthylazine, and nicosulfuron. The full list includes:
-
HPPD-inhibitors: Topramezone, Isoxaflutole, Tembotrione, Mesotrione
-
Photosystem II inhibitors: Atrazine, Terbuthylazine, Metribuzin
-
ALS inhibitors: Nicosulfuron, Flumetsulam
-
Synthetic auxins & others: 2,4-D-ethylhexyl, MCPA-isooctyl, Fluroxypyr-meptyl
-
Amide herbicides: Acetochlor, S-metolachlor, Metolachlor
-
Nitriles: Bromoxynil octanoate
This shift reflects the industry’s growing reliance on post-patent active ingredients that offer broad-spectrum control, low resistance risk, and favorable regulatory profiles.
China-Based Producers and Export Activity
Several leading agrochemical manufacturers are behind the wave of registrations, including:
-
Shandong Binnong Technology Co., Ltd.
-
Jiangsu Huifeng Agrochemical Co., Ltd.
-
Zhejiang Wynca Chemical Group
-
Limin Chemical Co., Ltd.
-
Shandong Weifang Rainbow Chemical Co., Ltd.
Many of these firms have also filed export-oriented formulations, as China continues to dominate global herbicide exports. Corn herbicides are a key driver of China’s formulation export volume, particularly to Southeast Asia, Eastern Europe, and South America.
Corn: A Strategic Crop for Food and Feed
Corn remains China’s largest food and feed crop by volume and acreage. Known for its high starch and dietary fiber content, corn supports both food processing and animal feed industries. Effective weed control is essential to maintaining yields, especially in regions transitioning to high-density mechanized planting.
Market Outlook
The approval of 88 new products in early 2024 suggests a strong pipeline for corn herbicides, particularly those built around novel or synergistic actives. Industry analysts expect further growth in pre-mix formulations and tank-mix flexible products, especially as resistance to traditional ALS and PSII inhibitors rises.
