Introduction of Altair Herbicide
Insecticides (India) Limited (IIL), a leading name in India’s crop protection and nutrition segment, has unveiled a new herbicide named Altair, developed to combat persistent weed challenges in paddy cultivation. This pre-emergent herbicide, a patented innovation by Nissan Chemical Corporation, Japan, will be exclusively marketed by IIL across India.
Altair represents a landmark addition to IIL’s portfolio, strengthening its decade-long strategic partnership with Nissan Chemical, a recognized global leader in agricultural innovation. This collaboration aims to deliver cutting-edge Japanese crop technology to Indian agriculture.
Technology and Application
Altair is designed for application 0–3 days post-transplantation of paddy. Its advanced formula forms a protective barrier in the soil, preventing weed germination and growth for up to 40–50 days, ensuring crucial early-stage crop protection.
Unlike traditional herbicides, Altair targets a broad spectrum of challenging weeds such as Echinochloa crus-galli, Ammania, Cyperus species, and others. The result is superior, long-lasting weed control with minimum labor and repeat interventions.
Field Performance and Farmer Feedback
Over the past year, Altair has been showcased in over 500 large-scale plot demonstrations, impacting more than 10,000 farmers across key paddy regions. Feedback indicates that Altair consistently outperforms existing herbicides, offering a safer, more efficient, and economically viable alternative for Indian farmers.
Market Access and Strategic Goals
Commenting on the launch, Rajesh Kumar Aggarwal, Managing Director of IIL, stated:
“We are thrilled to bring another breakthrough product from our partners Nissan to Indian paddy growers. Altair addresses critical weed control challenges, supporting our goal to empower Indian agriculture with superior technology.”
Dushyant Sood, Chief Marketing Officer of IIL, emphasized the need for innovation in weed management, citing issues such as manual weeding, yield loss, and late interventions. Altair is a timely solution to these widespread problems.
Manoj Singh Bhandari, Crop Manager – Rice, reaffirmed IIL’s commitment to ensuring nationwide availability through its robust distribution network, ensuring timely delivery ahead of the paddy season.
Competitive Landscape and Strategic Impact
The launch of Altair significantly boosts IIL’s standing in the herbicide market, currently dominated by major players such as UPL Limited, BASF India, and PI Industries. With exclusive rights and proven field efficacy, Altair positions IIL to capture a larger share of the rice herbicide market.
As a Japanese innovation tailored for Indian conditions, Altair exemplifies the growing emphasis on precision agriculture, sustainability, and farmer-centric innovation.
