New Triple-Action Innovation Aims to Protect Rice Yields Across India’s Key Paddy-Producing States
Tropical Agro, a Chennai-based leader in agri-input innovation, has launched a first-of-its-kind patented insecticide—Tag Stem Lee—targeted at controlling two of the most damaging pests in paddy cultivation: stem borer and leaf folder. These pests are known to cause severe yield losses across India’s rice-growing regions, threatening both farmer livelihoods and national food security.
Unveiled as a granular formulation, Tag Stem Lee is powered by a unique combination of three active ingredients, offering a dual-action, triple-protection mechanism designed for long-lasting pest control with minimal environmental impact.
Understanding the Threat: Stem Borer and Leaf Folder
Paddy stem borer infestations result in yield losses ranging from 10% to 40%, with visible symptoms including “Dead Heart” during the vegetative stage and “White Earhead” during the reproductive stage. Research shows that just 1% Dead Heart can lead to a 0.3% yield loss (approximately 12 kg/hectare), while 1% White Earhead may result in a 4.2% yield loss (around 183 kg/hectare).
Similarly, leaf folder infestations can slash yields by 30% to 80%, making effective control vital for food security and economic stability in rice-dominant regions.
Tag Stem Lee: A Triple-Protection Breakthrough
According to Tropical Agro’s internal trials and independent studies, Tag Stem Lee delivers:
- Immediate pest knockdown with prolonged residual activity
- Control of both Dead Heart and White Earhead symptoms
- Ease of use: Mixable with farmyard manure or sand for broadcast application
- Adaptability across both kharif and rabi seasons
“This patented innovation is only the beginning,” said VK Jhaver, Founder of Tropical Agrosystem (India) Pvt Ltd. “Many more transformative solutions are in the pipeline.”
R. Shanmuga Sai, Vice President – Sales, emphasized the product’s potential to transform rice pest management in major paddy-producing states such as West Bengal, Punjab, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Chhattisgarh.
Export Dynamics and Global Potential
Though designed for Indian agronomic conditions, the granular formulation of Tag Stem Lee positions it well for future export to Southeast Asia and African markets, where rice is a staple crop and pest pressures are similarly high. India, as one of the world’s largest rice exporters, could leverage Tag Stem Lee to boost domestic yields and ensure supply stability for key markets like Bangladesh, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, and Benin.
