Innovative Trichoderma-Based Biocontrol Product Promises Higher Wheat and Barley Yields
May 2025 — Argentina — Tropfen and Protergium have announced the launch of TROPBIO TEN, the first foliar-applied microbial biostimulant based on Trichoderma koningiopsis in Argentina. This breakthrough biocontrol product aims to improve plant health and increase yields in cereal crops, particularly wheat and barley.
Launch Events and Market Introduction
The product was introduced through workshops held in Rosario, Trenque Lauquen, and Tres Arroyos. Researchers, agronomic consultants, and company representatives gathered to highlight the unique formulation and field performance of TROPBIO TEN.
Technological Innovation and Trial Results
TROPBIO TEN combines Trichoderma koningiopsis with a high-performance German adjuvant. This formulation preserves microbial viability and enhances hydration and absorption, resulting in:
- Wheat: Yield gains of up to 370 kg/ha with a 500-cc dose.
- Barley: Yield increases of 270 kg/ha with the same dose.
The 250-cc dose also provided measurable yield improvements, showcasing the product’s flexibility in application.
Mode of Action and Agronomic Benefits
TROPBIO TEN’s action mechanism involves three stages:
- Colonization: Trichoderma rapidly establishes itself, competing with pathogens.
- Control: Enzymes like chitinase and glucanase break down pathogenic fungi.
- Suppression & Defense: Triggers the plant’s defense systems, boosting vigor and resistance.
The product provides broad-spectrum disease control, longer residuality, and minimized reinfection risks. It also delivers a Plant Growth-Promoting Microorganism (PGPM) effect, stimulating plant metabolism and nutrient uptake.
Safety, Compatibility, and Application
Packaged in a sterile, ready-to-use liquid formulation, TROPBIO TEN is:
- Compatible with chemical fungicides.
- Environmentally safe with biodegradable surfactants.
- Effective as a standalone or complementary solution.
Strategic Collaboration and Future Outlook
“TROPBIO TEN reflects our strategic vision and commitment to collaboration,” said Julián Etchegoyen, CEO of Tropfen. “Partnering with Protergium has enabled the creation of a biocontrol solution with industry-leading performance.”
