Mexican Avocado Industry Charts Green Future with New Sustainability Framework
On April 2025, Mexico’s Avocado Institute unveiled its landmark initiative, the Path to Sustainability, a strategic roadmap developed with the Association of Avocado Exporting Producers and Packers of Mexico (APEAM) and the Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association (MHAIA). The plan sets ambitious 2035 goals including net-zero carbon emissions, zero deforestation, and sustainable water and biodiversity management across Mexico’s avocado industry.
Four Sustainability Pillars: Water, Forests, Climate, and Biodiversity
The initiative emphasizes four pillars:
- Water Conservation: By 2026, the entire avocado supply chain—from orchards to packing houses—will implement sustainable water practices. Notably, 60% of Michoacan orchards rely solely on rainfall, and 35% use advanced irrigation.
- Forest Restoration: APEAM’s Forest Restoration program and reforestation projects have planted over 3.6 million pine trees. A deforestation baseline study will guide future preservation.
- Biodiversity Protection: In 2024, a new strategy will expand pollinator protection, IPM techniques, and the planting of 1.6 million trees through MHAIA’s Forests for Monarchs alliance.
- Climate Action: Net-zero carbon emissions by 2035 will be achieved via supply chain optimization, carbon sequestration, and low-emission practices.
Governance and Transparency
Five interlinked programs structure the strategy:
- Corporate Governance for Sustainability
- Sustainable Orchards
- Sustainable Packing Houses
- Sustainable Distribution and Marketing
- Biodiversity and Watershed Restoration
Progress will be reported bi-annually to ensure stakeholder alignment and accountability.
Export Value, Global Impact, and Market Stats
Mexico is the world’s top producer and exporter of avocados, with over 2.4 million tonnes produced in 2023 and more than 1.2 million tonnes exported, valued at over US$3.5 billion. The U.S. is the key importer, followed by Canada, Japan, and European countries.
The sustainability strategy not only enhances Mexico’s environmental standing but also strengthens its competitive edge in high-demand export markets where sustainable sourcing is increasingly prioritized.
Environmental consultancy Pollination Group and Innovagro contributed to the roadmap’s development, emphasizing climate-smart agriculture and ecological balance.
