Jiangsu Zhongjiang Seed Industry Co., Ltd. (Zhongjiang Seed Industry), a leading Chinese agricultural enterprise, is currently embroiled in legal proceedings after failing to repay significant loan obligations. On April 10, the company announced that it had been sued by Xingye Bank’s Nanjing Luhe Branch for non-repayment of a loan principal and interest totaling USD 2.09 million (RMB 15 million). The court hearing is scheduled for April 27.
Overview of the Dispute
According to Zhongjiang Seed Industry’s disclosure, the company had entered into a “Working Capital Loan Contract” with Xingye Bank on July 28, 2023, agreeing to a loan term of one year. Due to failure to meet the repayment deadline, Xingye Bank has filed a lawsuit demanding the full loan amount, alongside penalty interest and compound interest.
In addition to this case, Zhongjiang Seed Industry’s holding subsidiary, Suqian Zhongjiang Seed Industry Co., Ltd., reportedly has two other overdue loans, amounting to a combined principal of USD 1.67 million (RMB 12 million).
Despite the lawsuits, Zhongjiang Seed Industry has assured stakeholders that its overall business operations remain normal and that the current legal actions have not exerted a significant adverse impact on its financial stability.
Company Background and Market Standing
Founded on January 8, 2002, Zhongjiang Seed Industry has a registered capital exceeding USD 24.66 million (RMB 177 million). The company specializes in rice, corn, wheat, oilseed rape, melons, and other seeds, and it holds the distinction of being the first national-level “breeding, multiplication, and promotion integration” seed enterprise in Jiangsu Province.
In 2014, Zhongjiang Seed Industry was listed on the National Equities Exchange and Quotations (NEEQ), widely known as the New Third Board. The company is currently under the control of China National Tree Seed Corporation.
Export and Industry Perspective
Although predominantly focused on the domestic Chinese seed market, the seed industry in China—including players like Zhongjiang—continues to eye export markets, with major export destinations being countries across Southeast Asia and Africa. Export value for China’s seed industry has shown modest annual growth, reflecting increasing demand for improved agricultural products globally.
Competitive Landscape
In the highly competitive Chinese seed industry, Zhongjiang Seed Industry faces rivalry from companies such as Longping High-Tech and Beijing Dabeinong Technology Group Co., Ltd., which are among the leading producers and innovators in seed technology.
Longping High-Tech, in particular, remains a dominant player in hybrid rice technology and enjoys a significant export footprint, with exports valued at approximately USD 50 million annually to countries like Vietnam, the Philippines, and India.
